Medium: Miniature, oils on ivory Owner: Marius Holtkott Comments: Owner states that the painting was purchased by great grandfather in Cologne Germany around WWI. Mozart expert Prof. Dr. Manfred Schmid relates that a famous collection from a Hagenauer family was sold circa 1920 in Cologne. Currently on exhibit at Vienna's Albertina museum, there is strong conviction that a Hagenauer collection of Mozartiana did once exist, but lack of provenance with this piece has kept researchers divided as to authentication.
There is an argument that the portrait was painted by Johann Eusebius Alphen.
Dr. Angermuller has expressed postive views on the portrait, though no delaration on its stance is forthcoming from the Mozarteum itself

Name: Junge mit Vogelnest Artist: Johann Zoffany (?) Year, Place: 1764-1765, London Medium: Oils Owner: Salzburg Mozarteum Comments: Credited to Johann Zafuley (Zoffany) and donated to the Mozarteum over 75 years ago, It is unknown If Zoffany actually painted the portrait, or if the image is Mozart. According to 19th century scholar William Barclay Squire, Zoffany was known to have painted the Bute family children during the same time and used a birds nest motif in Three Sons of John, 3rd Earl of Bute painted in 1763. The color and texture of the Bute portrait is consistent with Zoffany's use of color and contrast during period. The painting remains in the archives of the Mozarteum. Scholarly debate over it's authenticity has not detracted from it's international popularity.
