Name: Mozart Artist: Joseph Kuderna Year, Place: c. 1910, Vienna Medium: Silhouette Owner: Comments: The inscription reads: "Mozart-a present to Franz Schubert from his dear friend Kupelwiesser". Schubert's signature is a deliberate forgery, but the words are not. (The painter Leopold Kupelwisser was a friend of Schubert's.) Kuderna faked thousands of silhouettes around 1910, mainly of aristocrats and famous musicians, from a limited number of male and female types. He frequently forged portraits of Mozart and his father and sister. Another of Kuderna's Mozart silhouettes, allegedly made by Nannerl and given to a Countess Althan in1781, was in the Deutsche Staatsbibliotek, Berlin; it was published by Georg Schoenemann in the Jahrbuch der Musikbibliotek Peters fur 1940, Leipzig.
